"Explaining the fraud, a senior police officer said a fake interactive voice response (IVR) call was first made to the victim. It claims that suspicious activity has taken place in the person’s account and a suspicious new device was trying to log into the account.
The voice then asks the person to press number 1 to confirm their identity. Once it’s done, an OTP is sent to the mobile phone through a text message. However, this message contains only the OTP and no information about any amount to be transferred is mentioned. Once the victim unsuspectingly enters the OTP, the call gets disconnected. However, when the person checks the e-wallet, it dawns that a huge amount is money has been debited from the account. Nine such cases have been registered in Tamil Nadu in the past month alone, the officer said."
"After the unique ID is introduced, whenever a phone number is utilized for a cybercrime, its real owner could be identified easily. The unique ID will also help trace the other SIM cards in that person’s name, places they were purchased, locations where the SIM cards are currently in use and other details, said the official.
When the new ID comes into force, the owner of the SIM card also would have to reveal whether it was bought for use by a relative.
Under the present rules in the country, a person can own a maximum of nine SIM cards, except in Jammu Kashmir and Northeastern states, where the number is six. Any additional SIM has to be surrendered."
“Indians received nearly 12 fake or scam messages every day with almost 82% having clicked or fallen for these messages. 49% Indians were unable to recognise scam messages due to the lack of typos or errors as the use of AI has increased the scale and sophistication of phishing attacks.”
““It’s not just the speed and volume, but the sophistication. Thanks to AI it can be incredibly difficult to know if that delivery text message or bank alert notification is real or not. So much so that 73% of Indians believe they have a better shot at solving the Rubik’s cube than identifying a scam message”, Roma Majumder, SVP of Product at McAfee said.”
"The incident occurred on November 9 around 5 pm while Saklecha was at her Bungalow. Her mother-in-law called, requesting her to make a Rs 480 online payment for sweets. Saklecha complied by scanning a QR code from her mobile linked to her bank account. However, within moments, her mother-in-law called back, stating that the sweet shop had contacted her for an additional payment, sharing Saklecha’s number with them.
Subsequently, Saklecha received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number, claiming to be from the sweet shop. The caller acknowledged receiving Rs 480 but insisted on GST payment. In a cunning move, the caller instructed Saklecha to input the figure 39,506 as a code on her mobile payment application, leading to a swift debit from her account. The caller, then alleging a mistaken transfer, guided her through a process to initiate a refund.
Unfortunately, Saklecha followed the instructions, resulting in another transaction and a loss of Rs 39,506. Realizing her mistake, she attempted to call back the number, only to find herself blocked. The Navghar police have registered a case under IPC sections for cheating and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act against the unknown caller."
“As per The TOI, the scam unfolded late at night when Prabhjyot received a call that initially appeared to be from her nephew in Canada. The caller skillfully replicated her nephew’s voice, speaking flawless Punjabi and expressing urgency due to an apparent accident, coupled with impending legal trouble. “He sounded just like my nephew and spoke exactly in the Punjabi we speak at home with all the nuances. He called me late in the night and said he had an accident and was about to be jailed. He requested me to transfer money and keep this conversation a secret,” Prabhjyot recounted, still reeling from the shock of the sophisticated scam.”
"To curb rising instances of online payment frauds, the government is planning to introduce a minimum time for a transaction beyond a particular amount happening for the first time between two persons. The plan likely includes a possible four-hour window for the first transaction between two users for digital payments being processed for all transactions likely above Rs 2,000, government officials told The Indian Express.
While the process is expected to add some friction to digital payments, officials are of the view that it is necessary to mitigate cybersecurity concerns. If finalised, the measure could cover a wide range of digital payments through Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and even the Unified Payments Interface (UPI)."
“The deceptive scheme involved an enticing advertisement on Facebook, promising an auction of seized properties from a nationalised bank’s defaulters.”
“Channakeshava KS, a sales executive working at an automobile firm, got a call from a number at 11:39 am on Monday and found it to be an automated one, with a voice message that read, “We have received an order for Rs 5,345 from your Swiggy account, if it is you please press 2, otherwise press 1,”.”
This is the same strategy that was used to trick me into giving access to my Paytm Postpaid account as mentioned in the linked post.
“Police said that its Cyber Wing was able to recover 20% of this amount and also blocked 5,107 bank accounts, 3,289 mobile numbers, 239 social media accounts and 945 websites that were used to commit the frauds.”
